Importance of a Good Story

As many of you know, I officially launched my website earlier this week after months of slowly learning about the backend to my website, how to write code and more importantly, how to ask for help.  As a result of this launch, I was humbled and relieved to read the encouraging email responses.  One of my favorite responses came in from my father-in-law, Rob, and I’ve decided to share it because it illustrates, yet again, the importance of a good story.

In the late 1980′s Connecticut State Parks hired a consultant to do a master plan for the proposed Rapids Exhibit Center at Windsor Locks Canal.  On the team was a high paid national consultant that we would get for half a day, when she flew into town.  She consulted with museums across the country giving them advice about the latest trends and technologies.  The meeting with her lasted almost three hours but I hadn’t gotten anything substantial.  In a desparate act I asked her one final question, “New England is blessed with hundreds of museums.  What separates those that make it, from those that …. don’t?”
She thought for a moment and said three words ……….. “A good story”.

And that is a true story.
Love,
Dad

Appreciating a visual + verbal story.

friend posted this video by gnarly bay on Facebook the other day and it immediately caught my attention because of the word ‘story’ in the title.  Perhaps it’s because I’m thoroughly involved in editing pages and pages of my father’s story or because I’m astounded at the fact that history was created based upon stories – regardless, I’ve become enraptured with this concept of storytelling.  Consequently, my captured knowledge of 8 years of marketing are now evolving into an out-pouring of people’s, brand’s, organization’s stories instead of through the traditional, textbook stratified marketing approach.

As I watched and listened to ‘a story for tomorrow’, the visuals, the words, the pace all wove together in perfect harmony, for me.  In my humble opinion, this is the future of marketing.

I hope that you enjoy this beautiful video.

Namaste.
